St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a popular destination for leisure sailors.  Snorkelers and divers are also drawn by the region's many underwater attractions, especially the coral-luscious Tobago Cays.  Consisting of a necklace of 32 islands and cays, only nine of them inhabited.

Saint Vincent island is 18 miles long and 11 miles wide and is located 100 miles west of Barbados.  It's dominated by the 4,048-foot-high, active volcano, called La Soufriere, which last erupted in 1979.  Mainland St Vincent is one of the few places on Earth that can boast about having black-sand beaches and white-sand beaches in the same country.  There are places where there is just a rock that borders the black-sand beach from the white-sand beach. The black sand, which was formed by the action of the volcano, is said to be able to provide one of the minerals that is needed by the human body.  The majority of the beaches on the mainland have black sand (more than 95%), while all of the beaches in the Grenadines have white sand.

Collecting Shipwreck and Historic Coins

Intrigue and legend have created a great desire and interest collecting ancient and shipwreck coins.  The coins are not just beautiful artifacts or pieces of history they are really are historic treasures.

The thought of owning something that ended up at the bottom of the sea after a tragic and dramatic occurrence appeals to many. Countless ships are rumored to have gone down with a large amount of gold and silver coins.  For instance, the Civil War Era's S.S. Republic sunk in the Atlantic Ocean during a hurricane in 1865.  The cargo contained thousands of U.S. coins. Some of these coins have been auctioned for over $100,000 each.

Spanish coins are some of the most commonly found coins originating from shipwrecks. This is because many Spanish galleons were lost at sea in the process of bringing silver and gold from the New World to Spain. Two of the most infamous shipwrecks are the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which sunk off the coast of Florida in 1622, and the El Cazador, which sunk off the coast of Lousiana in 1784.

Care must be taken in purchasing ancient and sunken treasure coins.  Expert coin collectors and dealers are quite adept at identifying authentic treasure coins.  Purchase from a reputable seller who is dedicated to knowing the history and the value of each coin.  Coins should come with a Certificate of Authenticity validating your purchase.
