The northern two thirds of St. Maarten belongs to French
Guadeloupe and is called St. Martin. The southern third is
part of the Netherlands Antilles chain of islands and is governmentally
linked to the Netherlands. The Dutch portion of the island covers 13
square miles and was badly damaged by Hurricane Luis in 1995. Tourism is the primary industry.
