The largest Caribbean Island in both size and
population, Cuba has an area of 42,804 square miles and 11 million
residents. The nation won its independence from Spain in 1898 and -
until the communist revolution of 1959 - was a favorite of US tourists
with its luxurious hotels, nightlife, and gambling. Its
primary exports are sugar and nickel, while Cuban cigars are still
considered the finest in the world. The capital, Havana, boasts more
than two million residents.
