Until 1973, Belize was a colony of the United Kingdom, British Honduras.  It became independent in 1981.  Bordering Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea, it has a subtropical climate with dense forests where jaguar still roam.  Agriculture has become dominate, with crops such as sugar-cane, rice and fruit.  Tourism has also developed well.
